The festival was set up in 2001. Over 50 teams from schools from Plymouth and surrounding villages compete in a 2 day event. Young umpires from 12 to 16 umpire all the games and DHUA have sponsored the Young Umpire Award since 2007.
In June 2011, the Plymouth Primary School Mixed Hockey Festival was granted the Inspire Mark - the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In 2013 this award was renamed in memory of Julia Gill (DHUA Chief Coach) who worked tirelessly with young umpires in Devon.
